What Are Invisalign Retainers?

Put simply, Invisalign retainers are built around a scan we undertake of your teeth, ensuring both that they fit exactly and that they can bring the right teeth into proper alignment. How Do Invisalign Retainers Work?

Invisalign retainers work by applying particular pressures to those of your teeth that we identify need to be realigned. As time goes by, each retainer you wear will work slightly differently on this teeth to ensure they are gradually brought into full alignment – and your smile looks straight.

The design of Invisalign retainers is very clever. Internally they have a slight texture that Invisalign called SmartTrack. This texture does a lot of the work, and is so effective that it cuts the period of treatment by half when compared to other products on the market. Similarly, the edges of Invisalign retainers can be trimmed to your teeth, rather than – as in other products – running straight along the gum.

Depending on your particular smile, an Invisalign treatment can last from three to eighteen months. Minor imperfections can begin to be resolved within weeks; of course, more complicated smiles will require longer. But on average, clients see results in less than two years.

Invisalign retainers need to be worn for between twenty and twenty-two hours a day during the period of treatment, but you should absolutely take them out to eat, and give yourself to break when necessary. You’ll also change aligners on dates you’ll agree with us in advance. 

You’ll need to keep your teeth clean, too, of course, and take care of each of your aligners – any breakages or other imperfections will make them less effective. Once the treatment is over, you’ll have a retainer you’ll need to wear while sleeping to ensure your teeth stay in their new alignment – but you shouldn’t have to have any further adjustments again.
